chateau...

                                                                                       the dream

people often assume that because i live in france
i have a magnificent abode

they imagine a house of grand proportions
and well tended extensive gardens

in their minds eye they see weathered stone
beautiful shutters and wonderful detailing
and inside they envision faded fabrics
stunning french armoires and such like delights

when i first arrived in northern france 10 years back
i did indeed have a large house
with a large rambling secret garden
but even this house opened directly onto the street
not exactly a chateau

sadly i lost this home
when the young frenchie decided i was over the hill
and not far off from being menopausal

the reality

so i think you can see clearly
the modesty of my humble home

and the enormous life lesson i have learnt is that less is more

even in this modest dwelling the garden is too big
700m2 what am i supposed to do with that

so the next purchase will be smaller yet
better to have a well maintained and  manageable mini jewel
than a crumbling chateau

and this philosophy sits comfortably
with my rather limited financial means

afterall why battle with a shed load a housework
dusting endless unnecessary objects when in the end
life is too short to be over burdened materialistically

there is so much to see and do and delight upon in this world
and eventually we leave this world the same as we arrived

empty handed

what say you
one 'n all

oh yes, the Château! Know that dream well... Don't be fooled by my pretty pictures either - we live in the country, have huge garden (2,500 m2 = so much work!) and a big house (70s - yuk! (but at least we've been able to knock it down in places and start all over again...)that we are still renovating... it's not exactly a 17th C palace. You're right, the older I get, the less stuff I want. Maybe one day we'll live on a boat, with a minimum of things (my husband's dream)... I just want to travel and have some fun - guess we're getting old (Menopause here we come :))

Good afternoon! I have really enjoyed reading your blog, its been a while I have not been near blog land or Etsy properly for weeks..months now.I could comment on every post that I have read today but that would take far too long..Your house is beautiful and it looks big enough and lovely enough to me.You are right that it is better to have a manageable jewel than a crumbling chateau. We have a 2 bed house on the outskirts of a big city next door to an industrial estate. It is big enough although I would prefer to live someplace a bit quieter. Your dog is adorable!!Your illustrations look great too, maybe something to revisit?! Why did you stop? Have a great day :-)
